Outlook 2011 for Mac - Missing IMAP Folders

Ben Greiner -

We've seen some issues where IMAP folders in Microsoft Outlook 2011 for Mac go missing. We're not sure why they go missing, but we do know the fix:

  1. In Outlook, select Tools > IMAP Folders...
  2. Using the resulting Folder Browser window, navigate through all your folders looking for any that are NOT bold (the missing folders).
  3. Highlight any missing folders and choose to Subscribe (click the Plus button in the upper-left)
Close the window and your missing folders should reappear!

I tried your steps above, however the Subscribe button is grayed out.

    Hi Tony,

Do you have any missing folders? They will appear in the list as NOT bold. A missing folder must be highlighted before the Subscribe button will be selectable. If there are no missing folders then the Subscribe button will remain gray. If you're still having problems then talk with your email server admin or IT support company.

    Good luck!

I'm having the same problem but with a POP account. It's happened several times in the past and I needed to delete the account and re-install.

When I go into Outlook > Preferences > Accounts - there is no green dot to the left of the account name.

Hi Mark, Unfortunately, these instructions only work with IMAP. I recommend talking with your email host. Also, see https://forgetcomputers.zendesk.com/entries/34873-Email-Hosting-IMAP-vs-POP.

Ben, i don't know if i'm in the right place to ask this, but somehow i have a duplicate INBOX in my IMAP folder so i keep getting error code 1025 Mailbox already exists…

when i go into the folder browser i see the IMAP folder-->INBOX-->INBOX and when i click on any of the folders within the outer INBOX i have no options (permission, properties, subscribe, unsubscribe…nothing!)

    please help.

    Hi Olga,

I recommend contacting your email provider about this. You'll most likely need to clean things up in webmail then start over with a fresh desktop connection.

Hi Ben, I have a folder that appears on my server but has disappeared from my outlook. I followed your directions but the folder doesn't appear there at all. Any advice?
