Customize and Restrict Scope of Self Service in iOS

The Self Service web clip that comes with your Robot Cloud iOS instance is installed on all enrolled iOS devices by default. However, this behavior may not suit your environment or your end-users. This article demonstrates how to disable the default behavior and create a Self Service web clip with a customized icon and scope.

Disable Automatic Self Service Web Clip Installation

  1. Log in to your iOS instance and go to Settings > Mobile Device Management Framework Settings.
  2. Click on the Self Service tab. Uncheck 'Install Self Service Web Clip' then click 'Save'.

Create a Self Service Configuration Profile

  1. Log in to your iOS instance and go to Management > Mobile Device Profiles > Add Profile > Create Mobile Device Profile.
  2. Under the General tab > General sidebar, change the display name to 'Install Self Service Web Clip'.
  3. Under the General tab > Web Clips sidebar, click on 'Configure'.
  4. Under Label, type the name that you want your end users to see on their iOS devices.
  5. Under URL, paste the following address, ensuring you change YOUR-INSTANCE-NAME to match your iOS instance: https://m2.robotcloud.net/YOUR-INSTANCE-NAME/mdss/?udid=$UDID&installAllButton
  6. Under Icon, you can upload a custom icon that your end-users will see on their iOS devices.
  7. Check 'Full Screen' so that the web clip appears to run as a regular iOS app to your end-users then click 'Save'.

Add Scope Using Smart Mobile Device Groups

Option 1

  1. Determine the criteria for who will receive the Self Service web clip.
  2. Log in to your iOS instance and go to Management > Smart Mobile Device Groups > Create Smart Group.
  3. Enter a name for your Mobile Device Group, and enter the criteria for membership in the smart group then click 'Save'.
  4. Click on Management > Mobile Device Profiles > 'Install Self Service Web Clip' > Edit.
  5. Click on Scope > Add Mobile Device Groups > select the group you made. From this point on, any iOS device that meets your criteria will automatically have your customized Self Service web clip installed.

Option 2

  1. Make a list of the end-users who will receive the Self Service web clip.
  2. Log in to your iOS instance and go to Management > Static Mobile Device Groups > Create Static Group.
  3. Check the box to include the users on your list in the Static Mobile Device Group then click 'Save'.
  4. Click on Management > Mobile Device Profiles > 'Install Self Service Web Clip' > Edit.
  5. Click on Scope > Add Mobile Device Groups > select the group you made. From this point on, if you want to install or remove the Self Service web clip, you will come back to your Static Mobile Device Group and check/uncheck the members accordingly.

Troubleshooting

It's common when removing a device from management for the Self Service web clip to remain visible (but not function) on the device. The user simply needs to restart their device and the Self Service web clip will be removed.
